Summary: Ryder Blackwell is the wealthiest cattle baron this side of the Mississippi. He has built an empire for himself in hopes of getting distance from a tortured past.
Women chase him for his good looks and his money. So it is a novelty to him that the veterinarian Dr Lara. Montgomery steers clear of him despite his advances towards her.
Lara is wary of Ryder as she has heard all the gossip about his sexual exploits. She feels that she cannot afford to be part of such gossip as she is desperately trying to build her practice and redeem her family’s reputation.
In an attempt to get her to come to his ranch, Ryder buys the brood mare that Lara wants at the local auction. He tells her she can have the horse if she works at his ranch for the weekend.
This book by Mandy Baxter is about what happens in the weekend they spend together.
My thoughts: A short, well-written story with a predictable ending. The author seems to know quite a lot about ranches and ranching, which makes her descriptions of it enjoyable.
Although the story happens in just a weekend, the past stories of the characters have been incorporated well in the book. The ex-boyfriend part seemed slightly contrived but it is forgivable.
Note: This book was given to me by St. Martin’s Paperbacks in exchange for an honest review. I thank them for that.
